During my collaboration with Cordova Canillas, I designed the editorial layout for Papeles Manifesto 4. This design was inspired by the evocative imagery and the potent blend of beauty and brutality inherent in «Ultras,» the inaugural theatrical production of Papeles Manifesto. Directed by Daniel Rived Magem and featuring photography by Oscar Matt.
«Ultras» is a theatrical performance that explores the passionate and often violent world of sports fandom. Drawing inspiration from historical events like the Caravaggio incident and the Astor Place Riot, the play delves into the themes of fanaticism, ritual, and the power of collective emotion. It aims to recreate the visceral experience of a football match within a theatrical setting, prompting a critical examination of the nature of spectacle and the enduring appeal of sports.
For Papeles Manifesto 4, I created the «Ultras» lettering, drawing inspiration from gothic typography. I intentionally distorted and modernized the typeface, resulting in a unique and impactful visual identity that reflects the play’s themes of passion and aggression.
The design for Papeles Manifesto 4 embodies the play «Ultras» by juxtaposing elegance and brutality. Simple yet creative, it reflects the play’s inherent beauty and aggression. The songs are represented by text that emulates singing, contrasting with the bold, gothic typography of the main title, creating a dynamic and visually striking presentation.
